Behavior Policy

It is our duty to ensure that all students are safe at school and that the learning process is not disrupted or compromised for any student.  Therefore, we will hold all students accountable to follow the school behavioral expectations (see attached Expectations Matrix), which are:

  1. BE RESPECTFUL – Be kind and courteous to all adults and students, follow all teacher directions promptly, take care of our school, and take care of all equipment, materials, and belongings of the school, yourself, or others.

  2. BE RESPONSIBLE – Work hard to reach your goals, always do your best.

  3. BE SAFE – Avoid all actions that will harm themselves or others

Individual teachers will have more specific rules, expectations, and procedures for their classrooms.

Consequences

In order to provide and maintain a safe learning environment, it is important for everyone to follow certain rules, procedures, and expectations.  Students who choose to act out, fail to control themselves, or who threaten or harm others, etc., will be subject to disciplinary procedures.

Teachers will handle minor disruptive behaviors using at least three steps Including Think Time and a call or other contact to parents.  Chronic disruptive behavior and/or serious behavior issues will be handled by the office.

Serious behavior issues include (but are not limited to) dress code violations, foul language, cutting class, leaving school grounds without permission, harassment, aggressive language, gang activity, bullying, vandalism, smoking, alcohol, drugs, threats, fighting, aggressive physical contact, and weapons.

Consequences are intended to help the child think about and learn from his/her behaviors and to make better choices in the future.  They are also intended to protect other students.

Consequences will be assigned on a case by case basis with consideration given to the seriousness of the incident, the child’s age, the child’s behavior history, the child’s attitude, and the situation and/or extenuating circumstances.

At the office level, one or more of the following consequences will be assigned:

Time Out in the Office, Meeting with Principal, Work Duty, Parent Call, Loss of Recess, Tracking, Parent – Administration Conference, Restitution, Behavior Contract, Detention, In School Suspension (ISS), Out of School

Suspension (OSS)

PBIS Rewards system

We have purchased a software to help us track and intervene on behaviors.  It will also allow us to communicate with parents through an app. Parents will be able to see points earned for positive behaviors, minor and major behaviors as well as other items.  Below are several aspects of the system we will be taking advantage of.

Point system

Students will be earning points for positive behaviors demonstrated during the school day.  There will be classroom and school wide incentives and recognition for positive behavior.

Check in Check out (CICO)

CICO is a system that allows us to build relationships with students, identify obstacles that stand in the way of their learning, and set daily goals with students to help them overcome these obstacles.  This system will track behaviors and give parents a daily report on how they met their goals and what they could improve on.  This is not a punitive system but made to create discussion and set goals.

School store

Students will be able to use their points in a school store, where they can redeem points for items.

Raffle

Students will be put into a raffle for points earned and will be able to join the principal for an activity each month.

Minor and Major behaviors

This system will allow us to keep track of minor behaviors and Major behaviors.  These behaviors will all be able to be seen by parents on the parent app.
